Bryngwyn Llamas
Llamas as livestock guardians
Although gentle by
nature, male llamas tend to be protective and have been used
successfully to keep predators away from sheep, alpaca, goats and even
poultry. In the US gelded male llamas have killed coyotes which have
threatened their flocks and have been reported to herd sheep together
into one area or shelter to try and keep them safe.
However, not every male
llama is suited to the work of livestock guardian. A successful guard
llama should not be overly aggressive, rather he should display normal
llama curiosity, an acceptance of adults and children, an ability to
live in harmony with other livestock, and be able to distinguish a
potential predator from a family pet or its ‘own’ working colleague.
